Propelled by the growth of automotive industry, and the ubiquity of smart sensors, intelligent transport systems such as the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) have seen significant research interest in recent times. The emerging distributed IoV networks support real-time vehicular applications through on-device computing, communication-efficient data processing, edge computing and cloud aggregation. While enriching the user experience by minimizing the end-to-end latency through efficient energy management, IoV deployments face the fundamental challenge of security attacks. In this article, we discuss various security attack modes in an edge-centric intelligent IoV framework, consisting of distributed smart vehicles, and remote processing units. We highlight various attack detection and mitigation mechanism for the proposed IoV framework, to address the security challenges. Finally, we shed light on several future research directions to ensure security of sensory data in edge-centric IoV systems.
