This paper develops and applies a three-levelled hierarchical structure to assess the social impacts of three pavement alternatives: a traditional one and two eco-friendly alternatives. A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was carried out and the results were jointly analysed with the social impacts obtained. The gravel pavement has the highest negative impacts from social and environmental viewpoints. The fly ash-carbide lime-salt pavement has slightly higher environmental impacts than fly ash-carbide lime pavement, but the highest positive social scores. This research expands the still limited body of knowledge in social assessment in geotechnical engineering to include pavements. The visual displays proposed here also ease the analysis and comparison of impacts, which is key considering the increasing amount of data required for more comprehensive sustainability analyses entailing social and environmental pillars.
