This chapter provides a detailed history of Australia and its role in the development of the science and practice of CBT within the larger field of mental health service provision. The development of behavioural interventions and subsequent integration of cognitive approaches are outlined while linking science, policy, and practice. Regulations of the practice of psychotherapy are noted, and the important role of professional organizations to influence the science and practice of CBT are presented. Of note, the chapter reviews the role of CBT in the Australian national health system as well as strategies for the dissemination of CBT in Australia.
