Through effective diabetes self-management, people living with diabetes can improve their clinical outcomes and overall wellbeing while reducing diabetes-related complications and mortality.1 Nonetheless, at the individual level, diabetes self-management poses an enormous demand for those living with the condition and/or their family and carers. People living with diabetes have been found to make up to 180 extra decisions daily related to health activities and behaviours compared with those without diabetes.2 Typical examples of self-management decision-making include how much and which food should be eaten at each meal in order to maintain blood glucose levels within the target range, and whether to choose spontaneity by undertaking an unplanned activity. We present several health literacy tools: readability assessment, and understandability and actionability assessment (PEMAT).
