The rising prevalence of diabetes globally means that more people who access health services daily live with diabetes. Building health workforce capacity to provide person-centred care for people with diabetes and ensuring access to diabetes medications is paramount to optimising diabetes healthcare. Currently, Australia, the United States and Canada have credentialing / credentialling programs that recognise health professionals as diabetes educators or education specialists once they have completed a professional
development program and maintained their knowledge and skills. Other countries such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Denmark recognise advanced practice nurses specialising in diabetes; they encourage independent practice and advise health professionals to self-assess against relevant diabetes competency frameworks and provide tools to undertake the activity.
Some countries require a postgraduate qualification and all differ in terms of the allied health professions recognised. With the growing prevalence of diabetes and the complexity of medicines and technologies
available to manage diabetes and improve health outcomes, the diabetes-trained workforce is no longer adequate to meet the needs of all people living with diabetes. This workforce inadequacy is further impacted by a medical shortfall in areas of geographical remoteness in Australia, and populations of extreme disadvantage persist. The Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health Workforce projects a health workforce shortage of 18 million health workers by 2030,
suggesting that appropriate healthcare access will
become more challenging.
