Service-Learning with ‘soul’: A meaningful approach to Work Integrated Learning

Service Learning (SL) remains underappreciated in Australian universities as an experiential learning approach within Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). This paper applies Meaningful Evaluation to examine student learning outcomes for the UTS SOUL program between 2019 and 2021, focusing on the extent to which participants experience ‘meaning’ from a program. The findings suggest that students experienced ‘meaningful’ learning outcomes with respect to i) increased personal insight; ii) greater sense of belonging; iii) cognitive development, and iv) understanding of social issues. Consistent with the aims of WIL, the student outcomes from the experiential component of the program led to personal growth and professional development. Outcomes, however, were more evenly distributed across all four pathways of meaning when participants’ overall sense of achievement and inner change was considered, suggesting that SL has the potential to provide a unique WIL experience that is more holistic, meaningful, sustainable while being grounded in social justice principles.
