Growing fruit and vegetables in local food gardens provides multiple benefits. This chapter investigates the benefits of three types of local food gardens – community, school, and home gardens – for health improvements, disease protection, prevention, and enhanced social exchange possibilities. Using a literature review and exploration of three detailed case studies from different countries, self-reported and perceived health benefits are analysed in detail. This chapter collates an evidence base that confirms the health and social benefits of growing fruit and vegetables in the three types of gardens across geographical and social gradients. This research strengthens the argument that integrating local foodscapes can transform cities and towns into healthy and socially interactive places for people.
