This paper is concerned with the collaborative design of a reverse logistics supply chain, the important
back half of an organic waste circular economy in Sydney, Australia. Our effort goes against the
grain of dominant economic logic. While there is a well-developed forward supply chain that gets
food from farm to plate – facilitated by policies, market norms, practices and infrastructures – the
reverse logistics of getting organic waste materials back into the soil is largely absent. Our corrective
foray into redrawing the economy in circular terms involves diverting Sydney’s three thousand
tonnes per annum of spent coffee grounds (SCG) and chaff (a by-product of coffee roasting)
from landfill to farms. Doing so avoids greenhouse gas emissions that arise from rotting organic
waste and, instead, contributes to regenerative farming practice and rural livelihoods.
