This is a piece of longform journalism which builds on and extends my practice in the genre (see, eg. https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2019/december/anna-funder/stasiland-now), and represents in a broadly accessible form the foundational thinking and exploratory practice behind the monograph Wifedom. The work extends current thinking in the areas of Orwell studies and biographical writing, and builds on a growing body of work reconsidering the reputations of prominent male arts practitioners in history (see, eg. Claire Dederer, Rebecca Solnit, Adrienne Rich, Roxane Gay, Drusilla Modjeska) as well as feminist philosophy (especially Kate Manne).
