Neoliberal managerialism in universities disaggregates intellectual work into discrete tasks that can then be delivered via insecure contracts. Academic role fragmentation and precarity are therefore two sides of the same coin. Both, we argue, undermine the public purpose of universities. The chapter introduces the book’s focus on how these tendencies are contested. It explains the ‘generative’ analysis the book aims to undertake, as designed to reveal foundations for resistance, as well as to highlight the impacts of academic ‘fracturing’. It outlines the research program discussed in the book, which centres on a large set of interviews about the transformation of academic work conducted with academic teachers and managers, in a range of Australian universities.
