Dhaka, the sixth densest global megacity, has a population of nearly twenty-two million and a population density of 30,093 people per square km in 2022. It is primarily an agricultural country and is located along the fertile Brahmaputra-Ganges river delta in Bangladesh. Land area is scarce for food production in Dhaka, and land value is very high due to a highly compact urban pattern of multi-storied developments. It has been observed that a significant population of Dhaka city informally grows fruits and vegetables on the rooftops of buildings due to a lack of space on the ground. This chapter reviewed rooftop food growing practices and approaches, investigated how the residents in high-density living environments are incorporating local food gardens on the rooftops in the city of Dhaka, what are the typical characteristics of these gardens and households’ involvement in the growing process using two residential neighborhood case studies in Dhaka. This research determined the drivers that guide food growing on the rooftop gardens in Dhaka and communities’ and households’ knowledge and aspirations that influence urban agriculture preferences, decisions and prospects.
