This chapter explored different types of health promotion policies and initiatives that could be useful at the local level to help to improve the nutrition of school students through increased vegetable and fruit intake. This research investigated the nutrition education programs and implementation methods work successfully in school gardens and home garden settings using a review of the literature and four case studies. Outcomes suggested that nutrition education and experiential learning in schools should be integrated into the school curriculum, and students should develop gardening skills and knowledge. A comprehensive approach to connect home gardens and school gardens could work very well to continue healthy eating behaviours of students from school to home and improve healthy diets for students' families. Micro-level targeted policies and programs using a bottom-up approach can generate positive health benefits, knowledge and long-term sustained food networks in school and home gardens and extend beyond these boundaries.
