Metasurfaces advance the technology to develop high performance antenna systems due to their unique electromagnetic EM wave manipulation capabilities This article describes the antenna beam steering mechanism using semiperiodic metasurfaces locally aperiodic metasurfaces Metasurfaces are synthesized based on the near field phase transformation principle and placed atop the fixed beam antenna to steer the beam dynamically following Risley prism techniques We discuss several advances that have been made since the technology was first introduced
