In the recent decades, strong efforts have been provided to pin down innovative solutions to reduce sewage sludge produced during wastewater treatment processes. Several biological, chemical, and physical technologies have been proposed. However, only few of these solutions have been implemented at full-scale due to technical and economic issues. Indeed, some of the proposed technologies have the disadvantage of requiring high implementation and management costs to be applied at full-scale. Furthermore, some of these solutions may negatively affect both treated water and sewage sludge quality. Therefore, the application of such solutions requires the combination of environment and human health risks study to make their application reliable and sustainable. This chapter summarizes the current state of the art on the innovative solutions/technologies for sewage sludge management in order to facilitate their future applications.
