Abstract: Effective collaboration during project meetings is required to achieve the best project outcomes; however, collaboration can be difficult due to the differing perspectives of the meeting participants and the complex decisions that must be negotiated. Research is needed to clarify the nature of the interactions made during project meetings to improve collaboration within the project teams; however, it is difficult for researchers to gain access to such meetings. A major hurdle can be gaining permission to record the meetings, either audio or video. The method outlined in this chapter enables researchers to collect and analyse detailed data to evaluate collaboration in practice without the use of recordings. The method interweaves three approaches throughout a longitudinal research design. Note taking (Approach 1) during the meetings is combined with short surveys (Approach 2) and targeted short and long interviews (Approach 3) after the meetings. The data analysis approaches include sequential interaction analysis, thematic coding of interview data and the development of event network diagrams. This method has been shown to be useful in exploring detailed design meetings in a construction setting and may provide inspiration to other researchers facing similar challenges in a range of project environments.
