This chapter introduces two leadership concepts only found in projects: horizontal and balanced leadership. The former applies when the project manager is not the expert in a particular skill area, but a skilled leader is required to move the project forward. The latter is applied to ensure that the best possible leader is in charge of leadership at any time in the project. These two leadership concepts complement the existing dichotomy of team-based and person-based leadership and explain how leadership authority is dynamically assigned to people in situational contingency in projects.
