Performance enhancement studies on the liquid cooling plate fully filled with porous medium for thermal management of lithium-ion battery pack

In order to address the thermal management of lithium-ion battery pack, in this work, a liquid cooling plate fully filled with porous medium is proposed and compared with the liquid cooling plate without porous medium. Results showed that with the fully filled porous medium, the maximum temperature and temperature difference of each cell in the pack cooling by liquid cooling plate are significantly reduced, which shows that the liquid cooling plate fully filled with porous medium has better temperature control ability for thermal management of lithium-ion battery pack. Then, effects of porosity and porous material are investiagted in terms of maximum temperature and temperature difference of each cell in the pack and prerssure drop of liquid cooling plate. Results suggest that the higher porosity and thermal conductivity of porous medium are recommended to apply in the liquid cooling plate for thermal management of lithium-ion battery pack.
