Travel places the individual in situations where difference and the presence of the other can challenge our understanding of the world and our own selves. The complexity of this experience, it is suggested, benefits from the use of more than one ?voice? in analysis. This paper presents a theoretical understanding of the encounter with difference in travel with short pieces of supporting narrative and critical-creative writing, as three ?voices? that combine to give a more dimensioned analysis of the paradoxical experience of travel
