This seminar is Part 1 of Seminar 1 of the 2007 Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Lecture Series.
Addressing the broad question “What is Civil Society?”. Civil Society, like most concepts in the social sciences, is a highly contested idea. It is possible to develop an argument, with respectable international citations, to demonstrate that it is central to a democratic society, or equally, that it is at best meaningless, at worst a dangerous and misleading concept.
