This seminar is Part 2 of Seminar 7 of the 2007 Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Lecture Series. Vedna Jivan discusses public interest litigation and the role it can play in civil society and for civil society in the realisation of human rights and governance at the domestic level. It refers to the landmark public interest litigation case ‘Vishaka’ heard in the Indian Supreme Court and focuses on cosmopolitan civil society occurring on a domestic level in India. This seminar addresses three main questions. Firstly, what is public interest litigation? Secondly, what role can it play in cosmopolitan civil societies, particularly in human rights and governance implementation. Finally, what are the benefits and problems with this approach?
