The following paper seeks to review the adequacy of the most commonly cited, or popular, explanations for the origin and strength of non-profit organisations by testing their ability to explain important instances of the origins, growth and transformation of non-profit organisations in Australia. It is written by an historian who looks to other social sciences for ideas. It finds the popular economics-generated theories helpful but limited, largely because they are interested only in some of all possible types of non-profit organisations.
