This article reflects on some of the definitions and practices that fall under the heading `discourse studies. The springboard for my reflections is Mats Alvessons and Dan Kärremans retrospective piece, `Decolonializing discourse, published in this issue. In responding to their piece, Ill address some of the `big issues they raise: discourse as conceptual frame; discourse as language; the agency of discourse, and discourse as opposed to non-discourse.
