Standing in the shade of the house, I feel the ground cool and dry underfoot. Blades of grass tickle my soles. I want to rub them into the ground to scratch the itch. Im looking at Dad sitting on his hessian bag in the shade of the huge jacaranda, methodically weeding the lawn; between us an expanse of grass burns in the harsh mid-afternoon sunlight as I contemplate how to get across it in bare feet.
