These are an important comparison with his published articles – indicate background for the stories as well as tensions around reporting. Diary entries record Mani’s decision to seek rice aid for India from Indonesian nationalists; records his frequent meetings with Indian ‘deserters’ now supporting Indonesians; expresses frustration at Indian army officers supporting Dutch; describes British attempted censorship and bargaining over future of ‘deserters’.
