pubs.rights-statement	The Princess Theatre Inversion is an investigative spatial performance that explores performative spatiality through the re-appropriation of iconic architectural space. Consistent with the work of Raumlabor Berlin, the research is in the field of ‘critical spatial practice’ as defined by Jane Rendell as ‘spatial aspects of interdisciplinary processes or practices that operate between arts and architecture’. This research re-appropriates Melbournes Princess Theatre through the staging of Steve Reich’s Piano Phase. By placing an audience of 100 people on the stage facing two grand pianos and an empty auditorium, the research challenges traditional audience / performer / theatre spatial configurations. Employing piano as a mechanism to renegotiate these relations, the research findings suggest that performative spatiality is activated and co-produced through the relational field of spatial context, spectatorship and action. The significance of the research is to extend the expanded field of architecture through performative spatial practice. Its value is attested by the peer reviewed selection to exhibit and present the work as part of Situation 2014 at the RMIT Design Hub in Melbourne. The project was also published in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers under the title of Princess Theatre turned inside out.	en_US
