pubs.rights-statement	Plenty is a literary novellal that examines the asylum seeker debate from the perspective of the residents of a small coastal town. Research background This research is in the field of creative writing. Tom Keneally has used non-fiction to argue for greater acceptance of asylum seekers. Debra Adelaide has used first person epistolary fiction to present the experience of an asylum seeker. Libby Gleeson has used the young adult genre to write about an asylum seeker in hiding. All of these writers have taken an advocacy role encouraging the reader to see the issue from the perspective of the asylum seeker. The principal research question for this novel is how can one represent the experiences of the members of a small Australian community affected by the placement of a “Alternative Place of Detention” in their town. Research contribution Using the 17 year old Jed White as a peripheral narrator ensures that he does not already have a strong political position at the start of the novella, but discovers the effects on the community along with the reader. This allows the novella to represent the divisions between those who resent the asylum and those who have something to gain.. Research significance The book was published by Xoum. Peter Corris called it ‘an authentic voice telling a compelling story for our times’. The SMH said ‘it would be an excellent school text because of the nuanced way it treats the material and the authorial insight and sympathy afforded to the characters.’	en_US
