pubs.rights-statement	Research background This research is in the field of creative writing. David Marr has argued that literary fiction has an important role to play in public discussions of political events. Robert Drewe demonstrated that it is possible to incorporate an asylum seeker narrative into literary fiction without distorting the genre and without being tokenistic. Gail Jones has shown that fiction can take citizens inside political events that newspapers show from the outside – for example, letting a reader see what it feels like to be an asylum seeker on the Tampa. The principal research question fuelling the narrative is: How is it possible in fiction to represent an experience of depravation and cruelty so shocking that it seems ‘unspeakable’? Research contribution The book demonstrates that voice is the key factor in composing fictions that represent seemingly unspeakable cruelty. The use of first person epistolary narrative was vital. Using a warm, familiar and occasionally comic tone for the narrator draws the reader in. The epistolary format, addressed to George Clooney, allows the story to interrogate the role of celebrity in public discussions of humanitarianism. Research significance The book was published by Picador Australia. The collection was longlisted for the Stella Prize and shortlisted for the Kibble Awards. One reviewer called the title story ‘an understated masterpiece … the best short story I have read this year’ (Readings: 28 August 2013). Another said, ‘One can only hope our political leaders will read it’ (SMH: 7 September 2013).	en_US
