pubs.rights-statement	Contemporary design is increasingly dynamic, participatory and process oriented. Andrew Bluavelt states that “the nature of design has broadened… to the creation of systems and open-ended frameworks: designs for making designs”, referring to a wave of ‘relational design’ with a ‘performative dimension’. Examples include: a series of publications where topic and content is determined by online searches (http://www.anonymous-press.com); designs that grow through the rule-governed participation of the audience (Luna Maurer’s Fungus projects) and an architectural manifesto that is continuously redrawn on a wall according to edits to a Wikipedia page (Open Source Architecture Manifesto by Carlo Raiti Associati). Assemblage, a multi-disciplinary collaboration across the fields of design, archive and documentation practices was developed as part of the 2013 Underbelly Arts Lab and Festival. Assemblage was proposed as an ‘experimental catalog’. It transpired as a relational, open-ended work. Artistic refuse (data) from each of the lab participants was collected, documented, sorted and then generated into a unique outcome – an installation comprising a collection of sculptural artefacts. My research explores design practice where natural, technological and/or social processes are harnessed within emergent systems. Assemblage investigates how new orientations in design work as methods for the process and formation of design. The Rules of Assemblage, a system of conditional constraints used in the process of assemblage act as a ‘technique of relation’ (Manning and Massumi) modulating how a process can unfold. Assemblage demonstrates how processual constraints can act as affordances and how relational approaches decentralise creative production to a flat ontology with the practitioners, collected matter and rules having agentic capacity as collaborators in an openended, unfolding design process	en_US
