pubs.rights-statement	The research sits in the field of architectural design specifically related to ageing populations. Our projects into ageing populations develop from the work of Hans Becker whose Dutch model for care is world-renowned. He developed the concept of apartments for life. Our research extends this to apartment style living that can accommodate high care. It recognises that even when having to move to high care residences they should remain home-like in their nature as opposed to hospital-like. The Nambucca Heads facility draws its innovation from reference to design and scholarship into the residences for care of Australia’s ageing population. UnitingCare Ageing – a not-for-profit organisation – is committed to person-centred care that develops a home-like environment. Architecturally, this has developed the complex as an internalised community/village environment with a central hub of services. Roof-top terraces aim to maximise outlooks so that scenic surrounds are appreciated within secure environments. Service facilities have been strategically placed so as not to intrude on this spatial understanding. The design sought to embody the concept of ‘normalcy’ to reflect a home setting with small living clusters rather than ‘healthcare’ environments emphasising nurse stations and care services. Client Goals and Design Team Solutions To develop the ‘household’ model of care • Each house a U-configuration contained a legible front door, private lobby space, dining and living rooms and domestic kitchen facilities • Centralised service facilities including commercial kitchen and nursing care facilities. Develop Town concept • Resident facilities located adjacent to house groups to encourage mobility and sense of outings. • Back of house facilities established as serving the more important house spatiality.	en_US
