pubs.rights-statement	Research Background The research is in the field of environmental journalism. Franklin (2012) notes that “environmental journalism is an increasingly significant area for study within the broader field of journalism studies”. Bodker and Neverla (2012) argue that environmental journalism “sits at a complex of intersections between politics, business, science, nature and culture…but also in between the local, regional and global levels”. Howarth (2012) argues that notions of journalistic objectivity are “outdated and ill-equipped to deal with many of the new risk stories environmental journalism covers”. This research asks how a move away from traditional notions of objectivity can function in the context of a public broadcaster like the ABC which is bound by editorial principles of objectivity and balance. Research Contribution The project found that it is possible to create journalism that is not constrained by “objectivity” in the context of a public service broadcaster which is committed to objectivity by reframing the narrative so that the focus of the story shifted away from the costs and benefits of coal mining and onto the biographies and motivations of actors involved in participatory politics around coal mining. Through this “redrawing of boundaries” (Howarth) the project suggests one possible new model for environmental journalism. Research Significance In King Coal’s Kingdom was commissioned by and broadcast on ABC Radio National.	en_US
