This paper describes an application level active networking (ALAN) infrastructure that we have developed. An implementation has been released called "funnelWeb". This paper discusses the motivation for such a system, its architecture and implementation. We describe enhancements that can be made to Web-based caching and content delivery. The infrastructure developed and deployed represents a feasible platform for active network and active service experimentation. We outline the directions of our current research into application level routing (ALR). © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
