pubs.rights-statement	The sex workers rights movement which positions prostitution as “sex work” emerged in the 1970’s and has since been widely researched (Pheterson 1989, Jenness 1993, Kempadoo and Doezema 1998, Chateauvert 2013). The movement shares it’s aim to decriminalise sex work and recognise it as legitimate labour with several organisations including the Joint UN program on HIV/AIDS, the International Labour Organisation and Amnesty International. Yet according to research on Canadian media reporting on sex work from 1980-2005 narratives that reflect sex worker labour and human rights struggles are virtually absent from mainstream media reporting. The research data demonstrated that instead media overwhelmingly use standardised scripts in which sex workers “are presented as morally lost and legally corrupt, and as vectors of social and physical malaise” (Hallgrimsdottir et al 2006). This research in the form of a documentary commissioned by Radio Belgium and Radio France tells the story of the 1975 prostitutes strike in which hundreds of sex workers occupied French churches in defence of their right to work without criminal penalty. The documentary uses archival electronic reporting of the event along with voices of original strikers to tell the story from the sex workers perspective to a general audience for the first time. La Revolte des Prostituees was a finalist at the In the Dark Audio Award (UK) and was “screened” at the Sheffield Doc/Fest. The first day of the strike is now commemorated as International Whores Day.	en_US
