Research background This research sits in the field 2001: Communication and Media Studies. The research question was: ‘How was the Azaria Chamberlain case reported in the media and what role did the media play in the Chamberlain convictions?’ In the realm of cultural and feminist studies there is consensus that the sensationalist reporting of Azaria Chamberlain’s disappearance convicted her parents, Michael and Lindy, even before they stepped inside a courtroom (see Johnson 1984; Goldsworthy 1986; Howe 1989, 2005; Wilson 1990; Munro 1996). These scholarly accounts rely on assumptions about a wholly patriarchal media and persist despite altered perspectives about the role of the Australian public (Howe 2005: 300). Research contribution Part of a larger project on media constructions of deviant women (Middleweek 2007) the radio documentary uses interviews with journalists and a content analysis of news articles to consider the extent to which the media have been constructed as a causal factor in the Chamberlain convictions (ie. the dominant thesis). The findings indicate that there were mainstream media workers actively supporting the couple’s bid for innocence. Research significance The radio documentary was broadcast on 8 June 2012 on ABC Radio National’s ‘The Media Report’ program and was cited in a ‘Retro Report’ documentary produced for the New York Times online (16 November 2014). http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/17/us/vindication-at-last-for-a-woman-scorned-by-australias-news-media.html?_r=0	en_US
