Spolia, or ‘spoils’, describes architectural elements that have been removed from their original site and context, i.g. a door frieze, and transported, often through wars and victories, to a new site where they are inserted into a new context. Architectural spolia present both iconographic interest and immediate spatial experience. Scholarly interest in spolia has been consistently strong in art history. Brenk (1987) examines the aesthetics of spolia in relation to ideology from the era of Constantine to Charlemagne and refutes older notions (see Krautheimer 1969) of spolia denoting a return to the aesthetics of classical antiquity. Tweten, McIntyre and Gardner (2016) extend the discussion on spolia into the realm of today’s conservation and interpretation by developing an innovative photographic technique in which to ensure the relief, or: threedimensional character of spolia. In contrast, my catalogue essay on Nora Okka’s spolia exhibition in the Athens Conservatoire from Dec 2015 which features paper squeezes from the antique stone spolia of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, is concerned with the complex spatial aspects of spolia in exhibition rather than on site. The research question inherent in my short essay is thus twofold and relate to both spatial theory and practices of curating: what are the temporal aspects of spolia exhibited and transferred to another medium, in this case, paper, and, how does the visitor experience the space. My research contribution, building Liverani’s(2011) notion of ‘tripoploi’ , i.e. the visual experience, lies in the development and articulation notion of the ‘tritopoi’, i.e. the triple spatial and temporal experience of spolia in exhibition.	en_US
