pubs.rights-statement	Detective Work is a creative non-fiction crime novel that investigates a real murder using fictional techniques. Research background The research sits in FOR 1904 Performing Arts and Creative Writing. With In Cold Blood Truman Capote invented the creative non-fiction crime genre, exploring real world murders. Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold added a fictional narrator to this genre. In John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil the fictional narrator eclipses the real crime, to the detriment of the story. The research question for this book was: how does exploring a real unsolved murder challenge the traditional creative non-fiction crime genre? Research contribution Detective Work shows that when the creative non-fiction crime genre investigates an unsolved real-world murder it is possible to avoid the traditional narrative progression of enigma and pursuit towards a neat solution. Because the real world does not offer neat solutions the book has a rationale for not following formulaic storytelling. This enables the book to explore the themes of uncertainty and lack of closure in ways that would not otherwise be possible in successful mainstream crime fiction. Research significance Detective Work was published by Xoum publishing. The Sydney Morning Herald called it ‘an evocative and thoughtful novel that builds to a sadly realistic conclusion’. Professor Sue Turnbull from University of Wollongong wrote, ‘John Dale has written a crime novel that manages both to enthrall and to break the mould.’	en_US
