This paper presents a hybrid thermal model with distributed heat sources for thermal analysis of soft magnetic composite (SMC) motors. The model uses a combination of lumped and distributed thermal parameters, which can be obtained from motor dimensions and thermal constants. The model can be used to calculate the core loss in each part, in combination with three-dimensional magnetic field finite-element analysis. The thermal model is applied to calculate the temperature distributions in a claw pole permanent-magnet motor with SMC stator. © 2005 IEEE.
