pubs.rights-statement	Rule of law is an historical novel that uncovers the origins of post-war international criminal law and attempts to create an international rule of law, as well as of postwar Germany’s political culture, in the first Nuremberg trial of Nazi leaders in 1945-46. Research background The research field is the history and philosophy of law and justice (AFR code: 220204). Philippe Sands has delved into the tension between a human-rights focus and one on genocide during the trial in his East West Street (2016). The most comprehensive analysis is Telford Taylor, The anatomy of the Nuremberg trials (1993). Ian Buruma contextualises the trial in the hiatus following VE Day in Year Zero: a history of 1945 (2013). The research question is: ‘Under what circumstances did the project arise to create an international rule of law as a prophylactic against aggressive war and crimes against humanity?’ Research contribution The novel shows how the foundations of today’s international criminal-legal framework were laid in a unique historical drama which drew in key legal and linguistic innovators. Research significance No funding was sought for this project. Since the book was released only in October 2016, it has yet to be reviewed. In his endorsement, the Hon Michael Kirby writes: ‘This is a gripping story of one of the great moments in history.’ In his own endorsement, Geoffrey Robertson QC writes: ‘A fascinating novel, that captures the drama of history’s most important trial which laid the foundations for international criminal law.’	en_US
