The challenge today is to form an urban design practice as the vital component in the making of our cities,
towns and suburbs. Between the failures of planning and the limits of architecture, urban design must meet
the challenge of accommodating urban communities in places that are legibly structured, environmentally
responsive and adaptable in the long term. Good urban design must be underpinned by a thorough urban
analysis to understand the form and characteristics of the place, and the methods utilised in the analysis
should lead directly to those subsequently developed in the project.
