This paper investigates the losses that may occur in the windings of a switched reluctance machine due to additional eddy currents. Essentially, turns on the surface of the leading-edge coil side of the stator pole will experience a magnetic field during the conducting cycle in a similar manner to an airgap winding. A finite element model is developed that splits the coils into individual turns so that the losses in each turn can be calculated individually. © 2006, IEEE. All rights reserved.
