A model for the heart rate response to treadmill walking exercise is proposed in this paper. The parameters of the model were experimentally identified which involved subjects walking at different speeds. A 2-degree-of-freedom controller was then developed for the regulation of the heart rate response during treadmill exercise. The controller consists of a piecewise LQ and an $H-{infty}$ sub-controllers. Experimental results demonstrated that the heart rate of the subjects were regulated by the proposed controller.
