© 2017 IEEE. The research presented in this paper focuses on the possibility of using a transmission with more than 2 speeds in purely electric vehicles (EVs). The activity is based on the simulation with Matlab/Simulink models of a testing rig of transmission in the lab of university. In the investigation an economic shifting schedule is selected as the shifting strategy and the Simulink model of mechanical energy source is built according to the characteristics of the motor in the testing rig. Based on the testing model, three EV cases are compared in terms of efficiency and performance of the electric motor in this paper. They refer to three drivetrain configurations, consisting of an upgraded double speed transmission, 3-speed and 4 speed transmissions respectively. The results demonstrate that the efficiency and performance of the motor are improved by adding gears. However, under conditions of different routes, the requirements of the quantity of speeds are different. The improvement of motor efficiency in an EV with more transmission speeds is greater when the vehicle drives on complex road conditions.
