Built around four case studies of intensive design studios, led by the authors and several collaborators at the Bauhaus Dessau with Interior Architecture and Architecture students from Sydney and Berlin between 2015 and 20181, this article asks whether and how, not only the architecture and design produced at the historic Bauhaus but also its pedagogical legacy can be made relevant for today’s design education. In particular, it outlines and argues for the value of performative strategies being developed and utilized in studio teaching when working from a historical precedent as a means to activate interior space through bodily action and thus transport the Bauhaus spirit of living and working together into the here and now.
