The various econometric and technical issues involved in using the AHEAD panel to address the issues of causation between health and socio-economic status (SES) were discussed. The AHEAD panel provided multiple measures of both health and SES. The interpretation of the relation among the prevalence measures was based on recursive ordering of health conditions. This method was adopted directly to the health prevalence measures, setting up a multivariate probit model in which the SES measures were introduced as explanatory variables.
