This working paper reports on an investigation that aims to understand what role tourism-led transformation has played in the representation of the industrial history of The Rocks. A qualitative case study based on document analysis and fieldwork observations were conducted to establish the relationship between tourism and heritage in The Rocks and to explore the area as an industrial working-class neighbourhood of Sydney. Findings suggest that The Rocks has been transformed into a tourism precinct in 1970s and its tourism-led transformation has resulted in the loss of its industrial narrative. A modicum of history has been preserved and represented for the purpose of tourism and the developers' interpretation of the industrial heritage of the area is contested due to the disinterest in industrial history.
