This paper seeks to explore the way design practices, (and theories, and methods) lead to strategic innovation - on an organisational, as well as a sector-level. We begin this paper begins by stepping away from the assumption that ‘strategic design’ leads to strategic innovation. Let’s start by saying ‘There is no such thing as strategic design’ and take a fresh look at the ways in which design and strategy interact, to understand them deeply. For this exploration, we will focus on two professional case studies from the public sector. We will explore how design projects and practices have influenced (or failed to influence) the strategies of the major stakeholder organizations involved. We will then use a change theory perspective to critically reflect on what design can do, and where design practices fall short and need to be augmented by practices from other fields.
