The Internet of Things (IoT) and the resulting disruptive industrial changes can lead to industry convergence – the emergence of a new inter-industry segment due to blurring industry boundaries. In such a converging environment, companies face technology- and market-related competency gaps, so that cross-sector collaborations become essential to maintain competitiveness. This requires an attempt to open the innovation process and to find suitable partners for strategic collaboration. Sectors affected by IoT as the link between physical streams of goods and virtual streams of information are logistics and information and communications technology (ICT). Based on patent analyses and case studies, this study identifies the main players as well as the respective competency gaps to derive according to open and closed innovation strategies relying on cross-sector collaborations of different partners. Within this potentially new IoT-based sector, logistics companies are the ones that can no longer rely on their traditional skills and thus face emerging technology competence gaps. While ICT companies are technologically well versed, they lack market knowledge and experience in the logistics domain. Furthermore, new players such as online retailers and start-ups are taking the opportunity to successfully position themselves in the emerging segment, thus intensifying the competition in both sectors. For logistics companies, a technology-based open innovation strategy is recommended with ICT firms being well suited for collaboration due to complementary competencies. Engaging in collaborative activities from the very beginning of the innovation process and involving a broad network of the right partners strengthens their innovation potential.
