This practice-based research project explores how designers might create discursive immersive ‘VR vignettes’ that provide opportunities for users to understand complex social issues in new ways (thinking outside their position). Through critically documenting the process of designing a VR vignette with the test case of Modern Loneliness, this research explores ways to incorporate narrative strategies and design principles that aim to provide the audience with the opportunity to experience multiple character perspectives of a particular situation. The research proposes that immersive VR vignettes could function as discursive objects that communicate ideas and inspire reflection for VR designers whilst also opening broader conversations about the complex social issues visualised.
