Cancer is among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Although different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been implemented for cancer management and reducing the mortality rate, the limitations attributed to these strategies have hampered the improvements in prognosis and overall survival of cancer patients. Early detection and an appropriate therapeutic strategy are critical steps toward cancer management and successful therapy. Therefore, there is a crucial demand for advanced technologies to bring existing cancer diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the next level. The emerging field of nanotechnology has involved nanoengineered materials and devices in upgrading the specificity and effectiveness of the current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The recent advances in developing nanocarriers and nano biosensors can enhance the sensitivity of detecting biomarkers and cancer cells. Moreover, engineered nanoparticles can increase therapeutic efficacy and diminish the side effects of conventional and novel therapeutic modalities. Theranostic agents are the next generation of multitasking nanoparticles that can detect and attack cancer cells simultaneously. This book chapter provides an insight into the advancement of nanotechnologies assisting early detection and cancer-targeted therapy and highlights the existing challenges in clinical trials and commercial products.
