At the heart of family therapy lies the notion of empathically aligning with a distressed family, collaborating to navigate and transform the challenges they face a difference that makes a difference (Bateson, 1972, p. 459). This approach is deeply rooted in values that guide our engagement as therapists and shape our interactions with families. This book embodies this significant approach. In addition to the practical focus on core skills found in many chapters, we have aimed not only to highlight the crucial role of the therapeutic relationship and interviewing skills but also to emphasise the importance of valuing and respecting diversity as a foundation for our practice. Family therapy, in many respects, has evolved in tandem with broader societal changes over the past decade, reflecting a growing awareness of issues related to privilege, equality, and structural disadvantages at both institutional and individual levels.
