This thesis explores the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) as a complementary medium to traditional art practices, examining their connection and highlighting inherent benefits and challenges. Using Practice-Based Research and Grounded Theory methodologies, this study observes a series of collaborations that create artworks exploring the integration of AR within the context of traditional sculpture practices. Two notable AR projects are reviewed: the conversion of the multi-medium film "Jarli" by Simon Rippingale into an AR experience for Science Alive! and the creation of the Platform exhibit with Sydney marble sculptor Alex Seton. Exploring AR as a complementary medium to traditional art practices unveils a nuanced dialogue, emphasising the importance of practitioners understanding the constraints and advantages of both mediums, facilitating a shared creative language between artists and technologists. The case studies ultimately highlight the theme of "magic" in merging tangible and elusive elements. This theme provides a playful engagement that underscores the duality between contrasting worlds. This research contributes to the evolving intersection of AR as a medium within contemporary art practices, shedding light on its potential to enhance and transform traditional artistic methods.
